Vegas, Baby! Day two.
May 31st
Friday: And of course I wake up early. Gambled very little until CJ met up with me and we … drank, ate, gambled, drank, talked, etc. Eva (my neighbor) showed up and hung with us for a while. Eventually CJ went back to her own room to get ready and I tried to snooze before I got ready myself.
All snazzed up in my new dress and CJ’s help with hair and make-up we set out again, more drinking and penny slots. Finally time for Bite.
Bite SPOILERS. 6 fairly competent vampire dancers and a weird looking vampire man that really doesn’t do much. Great rock music. Partway in they supposedly pick people from the audience, but one guy overacts so drastically you know immediately he’s a plant. Turns out he and his wife/girlfriend/female partner were twirly hang from a chain acrobats. Pretty good ones and hanging right in front of us. Another plant was one of those silk rope curtain acrobats that was cool too. The final audience plant was a big nerdy looking guy who turns out to be a great singer along the lines of Meatloaf. I think he was the most believable “actor” of all. Most of the dancers were painfully thin, and the star (the Queen of the Night) had a ribcage more prominent than her tits. How is that attractive? All in all, a good show. Worth the discounted rate but I’m glad I didn’t have to pay full price for it.
After that we took the Deuce down to Nine Fine Irishmen and had some fun and Magners, Casey and a couple of his friends showed up, we had Del Taco and headed back.

Alltel means what exactly?
May 31st
It sure as shit doesn’t mean Allover Telephone… or anything close.
Alltel does NOT have coverage in Las Vegas. Las Fucking Vegas! One of the biggest tourist cities in the US, and I roamed the whole time.
Alltel does NOT have coverage on the entire island of Oahu. Goddamn Honolulu! Again, one of the top tourist places in the US.
Check out their “coverage map” if you can see it. Isn’t that special. Can’t enlarge it, can’t get anything specific, and their color options make it impossible to see the actual differences.
I’m pretty sure I didn’t have service in Atlanta either. Can’t remember.
I did find a way to run Internet on my laptop through my mobile (something called PdaNet) and it worked okay, but at roaming prices it would have probably been cheaper to get the WiFi from the hotel. Guess I’ll find out when the bill is due.

Vegas, Baby! Day One.
May 31st
Thursday: Flight up was okay, wandered around the airport looking for the city bus to the Stratosphere, finally found it, and why are homeless people so talkative?
Checked in right away, package deal included BOGO tickets to Bite and I knew CJ wanted to go so went ahead and booked that. Room was nice/average but the hallway smelled like skunky pot. Casey went off to wander around and came back with some orange drink that was pretty good. His friends showed up and we pretty much hung out in the room while everyone (all 7 of us) showered and got ready to go out.
WALKED from the Strat to Fremont street. Could have killed Son for suggesting the walk and not letting me fund a cab ride. Got in argument with one of bitchy girls who keeps her poor husband on a VERY short leash. I’m seriously sick of hearing Ben Ben Ben every time he wanders three feet away. Shut UP Kristen. Had a drink on Fremont and waited for the light show. Disappointed. What the hell happened to the Fremont Street experience? Two music videos and ads for every place on the street? That’s not an experience! Tried to find a cab for all of us and ended up on the Deuce bus, which was slow but okay. Dumped everyone except Deseree and she and I carried on. There were hot South African guys on the bus. Ended up at Nine Fine Irishmen at the New York New York because it was her 22nd birthday and she picked the place.
Nine Fine Irishmen is now my very favorite pub ever. EVER. I want to live there.
They didn’t have Strongbow, but they did have Magners. And live music, some of which I recognize from the Brodignagian Bards. And more Magners. Des and I sang and laughed and drank and flirted and had a great time. And more Magners. I think I may have tried to drink dial some people. Lots of hot Irish guys, damn those people are friendly and just want to have a fun time. Maybe I’ll check out Ireland soon.
There was an adorable tiny philipino lady who, from what other people told me, is there EVERY night right down front. She must be 810 years old, wearing way too much makeup and all dolled up, sing and dancing right along with every song.
I left Des flirting with Michael from Dublin and got back to my room around 3:30 am to step over the passed out bodies and find my bed.

I'm back!
Jun 20th
I slept like a rock in my own bed. Squee.
Reminder: talk to doctor (or research online, duh) for temporary solve for restless leg issues while flying BEFORE the next flight. The trip out wasn’t bad but coming back was PAINFUL.
Casey informs me the bunch got Harley Davidson tats in memory of Ed. Dunno why, AFAIK he never had a Harley.
I have gifts for a select few cuz I didn’t have much money to play with. See previous notes on cash flow issues.
I need to find an attractive way to display sand and beach stuff I snagged. Bottle? One of those box frames? Hmmm.
My pictures are up on flickr. Will load up some of Ginnie’s when she gets around to putting them on the computer. Probably as soon as I give it up. I didn’t lug my old camera to Pearl Harbor/Arizona Memorial. You can’t carry any sort of bag or purse and my camera doesn’t have a strap.
The landscapers cleaned up around here while I was gone. No more jungle. Actually, they trimmed back a little too much.
We watched Penelope while on the plane. What the frak was that? Not campy enough to be campy if that’s what they were going for. Catherine O’Hara was going for the camp but everyone else seemed to think it was a more serious romantic comedy. And Reese Witherspoon seriously needs to gain a pound or two.
I must bitch or I wouldn't be me

EVERYthing is damp here.
My debit card was stolen by the NFCU the first time I tried to use it, though I did get it back. AFTER I transferred most of my money to my credit card, which for some reason won’t let me cash advance.
My feet ache.
Murphy has been dogging me this whole vacation. Little things yes, but Max thinks I’m the bad luck. Bad parking, bad ATM, bad food service, rain during the Luau, pulled over for speeding, traffic jams . . . everything we’ve tried to do has been harder and something always goes wrongish.
There is no Alltel service here so I’ve been roaming. Keep my phone turned off for the most part and only turn it on couple times a day for texts and voice mails. Hope nobody important has been trying to reach me…
We went to that stupid swap meet TWICE (Booths circle an entire stadium!) and we still couldn’t find the perfect gifts for folks back home. And they only take cash.
I never got off Arizona time, so I’m up every morning before the sun. I’m exhausted.
I keep getting the hiccups. Laugh riot. The sunrises are shit. It’s a nice place to visit but I wouldn’t want to live here.
I miss mine own bed.

Now that I got that off my chest, I’ll be back in AZ around midnight tonight. Likely to fall into an exhausted sleep most the day tomorrow. This has been (mostly) fun and some places are amazingly beautiful. Expect giant picture dump Friday.
Ginnie and Max went snorkeling yesterday and no she didn’t get past her dislike/fear of fish. Max says she wouldn’t dive down and was afraid to go out too far. He and Kela have some sort of training in California in August and deploy back to Iraq in October. This time near Baghdad but only for a year. Supposedly when they get back the following October, he’s going to fly us back out again. We’ll see.
Kela (Mikela something Lopez something) turns out to be a fairly nice girl. She needs to speak up more – tends to murmur so you’re always saying huh/what? around her – but a good sport for all our teasing. Max has a beer belly he expects to work off when he’s deployed and he got a sunburn before we got here just for me. Yes, I LOOOOOOVE peeling people. I know, kind of sick yo.
Wow, I’m tired. Maybe I’ll stretch out her eon the couchnm
Since the last post
Jun 18th
we’ve gone to Turtle Beach to watch the poor turtles ride the waves onto shore and not getting there. What a horrible existence, to bob in the waves hoping for just the right one to throw you ashore and NOT pull you back out again. Dudes need opposable thumbs . . . opposable flippers? Something to grab with. I supposed they’ve managed hundreds of years as they are. Just seems harder than it needs to be.
And we went swimming at some beach near there that starts with a W. Then back here for showers (sand gets everywhere) and onto Outback Steakhouse.
Today Kela and Max had to go to the base for work stuff so Ginnie and I watched Army guys do PT. Whoopie. Dunno where the hot guys in uniform are, but they ain’t here. Kela had to stay so Max took us up to the North Shore to try and teach Ginnie to boogie-board. We left there around lunchtime so we could hit the swap meet (for gits for friends) but apparently it’s not open until Tomorrow. Tonight we’re going to a Luau.
In my sitting around waiting time I’ve been reading Kela’s copy of Wicked. While I find the story interesting I can’t figure out HOW they made this into a Broadway musical. It’s mostly political and religious discussions.
Happy Fathers Day
Jun 15th
I stole some of Ginnie’s pictures to put on my flickr account, because Max’s laptop thinks MY memory card is obsolete. I guess it is but it still takes good pictures. Which I can’t show you til I get back so here are some of hers:

I’ve no idea if I spelled the place names correctly. Max’s laptop also doesn’t have an automatic spell-checker and he’s leary enough of letting me use it without downloading a bunch of add-ons. Not that Hawaiian place names would be in a spell-check database anyway. He’s only dipped his toe into what this thing can do and isn’t really interested in “fixing” anything. Fine, I’ll abstain.
Jun 15th
So, today . . .
Um, after everyone eventually got up this morning we um (did so much today that I can’t remember) oh yeah, stopped on the way to Pearl Harbor at some swap meet. And I looked for a Hawaiian dress everywhere. When I found one I liked, it wouldn’t fit and the ones that would fit me . . . can you picture a mumu? Uh, no.
On to the Pearl Harbor/Arizona memorial and we had a two-hour wait so we wandered over to the NEx to get Ginnie a new shirt after she dumped half a sno-cone down the front of hers.
And I found a dress! But Max had to buy it to get the better price and when I stopped at the ATM outside halfway through the transaction the frakking thing rebooted! Ate my frakking card. Max went to raise shit – which didn’t work being Saturday – and I apparently have to go back on Monday and hopefully I can retreive my card. After that back to the Memorial and that was really nice. By then my feet are trashed and I’m hot and cranky so we headed to Waikiki Internation market where I found a cute dress for Kira. Got back to Max’s (actually Kela’s) car just before the tow-truck.
From there we went further east and stopped at Hanama Bay(?) scenic point and climbed down the rocks to the spraying water. (Many, many pictures will be uploaded when I get home) and then up to Pali lookout. FINALLY back here where I can rest my feetsies.
Tomorrow beach. Tuesday Luau.
So far
Jun 14th
So we got in yesterday around 3:30. It was raining and we pretty much came here to Max and Kela’s apartment and chilled. Oh yeah, first meal in Hawaii was Taco Bell. I woke up this morning at my usual time 6ish and forced myself to go back to sleep. I was still up by 8, which is 5 here. FINALLY everyone else got up and we hit McDonald’s (didja know they have Spam and Eggs?) and wandered over to the base. While Kela did some quick (which didn’t end up being quick after all) business, Max took Ginnie and I over to where he actually works at the motor pool. And then up to KoleKole Pass and back to get Kela. Grocery shopping accomplished and now we’re making plans for the rest of the day.
Pictures as soon as I can figure out how to get them up here.
I'm still around
Jun 1st
It’s JUNE! I haven’t been letting myself get excited about this trip to Hawaii, but I have in my possession proof of purchased tickets for the trip out on June 12th, and Max tells me he HAS purchased the return tickets for the 19th. So (unfortunately?) Ginnie and I won’t be trapped in Hawaii after all. He’s on Honolulu so we’re planning the obligatory trip to Pearl Harbor and the Arizona monument that Ginnie wants. Sure, I’ll like it too. And I told him I wanted to check out whatever we could find of Lost sites. According to Google Earth, they’re on the North West side of the same island. Plus whatever “nature” beauty we can find.
Seriously though, there’s no frakking way I can make myself get on any sort of small inter-island hopper plane so if they decide to explore other islands I’m out. Ginnie would love a helicopter trip. Maybe there’s boats? I’m cool with boats. She wants to see the volcano on the big island. I just want to hang at a beach.
Speaking of Lost, holy crap! Things are definitely picking up on that show. BSG is really interesting, too!
Catchup time. Um, Friday night I hooked up with @LaDawn, @LauraK, and @ElizaSea and after drinks, we went to see the Sex and the City movie. Let me preface my comments with this statement: I have never seen the series. All I know is what any normal person gained from commercials, comments, and general chit-chat.
It was a nice little waste-some-time movie. If I had to relate to any character, I’d be closer to Samantha. I cannot conceive of being obsessed by designer labels. I own three pair of shoes. I cannot imagine needing a closet larger than my living room. Oh well. If you got it, flaunt it I guess. I just don’t get it. Maybe I’ve always been too cheap. And most Carrie’s clothes were Fugly! The only thing she wore that I liked was a tie-dyed long dress she had on in one scene.
But I kept getting yanked out of the movie by Carrie’s hands. IF you spent your entire existence in thousands of dollars of designer clothes and shoes, wouldn’t you take better care of your fingernails? Seriously! She has the ugliest nails I’ve ever seen in a movie. Not necessarily long and polished as she’s supposed to be a writer, but dayum girl, ever heard of a manicure?
So anyway, nice girlfriend flick.
Yesterday, I went to the Podcamp AZ workup. The thing isn’t until November but we volunteers are trying to make it bigger and better than last year. Right now the focus is on the media kit and website so we have something to show possible sponsors and speakers. We all went to lunch after so I got to just hang with my friends Sheila and Evo, Dani, Dan and CJ for a while.
