When worlds collide
Nov 12th
It freaks me out.
Twitter just started this listing thing. You can assign the people you follow to various lists. I got about halfway through and gave up.
Certain people are older Internet friends from the McCaffrey boards and BPOI. Some of those I’ve met in real life and a few are actual real friends now.
Certain people I’ve met through podcasting. Some of those I’ve met and are real friends, some are just fans (which is freaky in and of itself) and some I’ll never meet and really have no connection to, but follow because. A handful are writers I’ve met through podcasting who have become both semi-celebrities and semi-friends.
And then there’s the real life family, friends, kid’s friends, etc.
It’s weird enough when, because of some interesting banter or retweet, person A from list B starts following person R from list D.
Right?
This completely freaked me out today:

Katie Berry is one of my daughter’s friends we’ve known since Kindergarten. Seth Harwood is a published author and podcaster and cute as hell. They cannot know each other! Coincidence has made my mind explode.

Kira’s vocabulary has exploded too. In the last few days she’s started say things like, “Just listen to me, LISTEN to me! Be very careful out there so the monsters don’t get you.” She’s so insistent. And today in the car when I asked her if she was going to behave in the store she answered with the most nonchalant “of course” I couldn’t help but burst out laughing. Casey’s friend Charlie tells me Kira got up at the crack of dawn the other morning and proceeded to (attempt to) wash her dishes.
At this very moment she’s dancing to Funky Town in Shrek 2. I wish my camera had batteries. Crap.
I'm so busy
Sep 2nd
Damn, I’m going to be soooo busy this month! Even though I’m missing Dragon*Con this year, I won’t be sitting at home feeling sorry for myself.
Friday evening there is the usual #evfn. This week we’re back at Studio 5C. It’s a nice little gallery type place with a great patio for socializing and it’s right off Mill Ave if we want to carry on for the rest of the night. Plus, lots of people I kind of know through podcasting (and some I really do know) are gathering this weekend for…
The Deadpan BBQ Saturday afternoon-evening at my friend CJ’s house. Those are always lots of fun, and with no kids around this time I’m pretty sure it’ll be even better than before. Sunday evening is another Deadpan party, this time at the Tempe Palms hotel.
Tuesday evening I’m helping someone set up their recording studio and Wednesday night is our usual Evo@11 recording at Gangplank. Friday (11th) I’m going to my friend Dani’s for another “Slumber Party.” This time it’s a different presenter so we’ll have to see if she’s as funny as the last one.
My Dad turns 73 on the 13th. I wish he didn’t live so far away. He called me today while I was at IKEA so I was a bit distracted, but I had the hardest time explaining to him how my cell phone number stayed the same even though I’d moved. He just doesn’t get it. He wanted my new address so I’m standing there in the middle of the stupid store practically yelling it out for everyone to jot down. I was one of *those* people!
There’s a Brand-X T-Shirt Tweetup the following Thursday night. I’m still debating that one.
On the 18th I’m joining friends for my very first major league baseball game at Chase Field. I’ve never been so I can’t pass up this chance. After that I’ll be going to my very first Rocky Horror Picture Show! Thanks to the light rail I won’t have to do a lot of driving as everything is on the rail.
Yet another Can’t Stop the Serenity showing on the 19th. I don’t care what anyone says, it never gets old. Plus there’s a sing-along to Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog, so there!
And Kira’s 3rd Birthday is on the 29th. I don’t know what’s planned for that yet, but I’m sure we’ll do something. She’s excited. Practicing her three finger thing and asking where her birthday cake is already.
Busy, busy month and I’m sure there will be more adds to my calendar as I go along.
Plus that certain someone has said that September is a good possibility for a visit. We don’t communicate much so I’m not sure yet. Everything (except the slumber party) is something I could actually take him along and have fun. We’ll see.
Mr. Deity
Jun 28th
If you’ve never seen an episode of Mr. Deity, YOU MUST GO THERE NOW and start from the beginning. Short but hilarious. I love this show. Actually, watch the latest episode, “Mr Deity and the Book Part Deux” and that will hook you.
Subscribe on iTunes. Sit through all the prior seasons. It just gets better and better. I recommended this show a couple of years ago in my LJ and have kept up ever since.
If you decide you don’t like it, please tell me why. I’m interested to know who of my readers doesn’t find this even slightly amusing enough to subscribe.
PodCampAZ 2009!
Jun 22nd
PodCamp AZ is coming to the University of Advancing Technology November 14th and 15th! PodCampAZ is a FREE networking media “unconference”, dedicated to blogging, video blogging, podcasting, social networking, and all other relevant media. At the heart of the unconference is the opportunity to have a conversation at large with those innovators which have created a successful blend of relevant media and put it to work for them. Speakers will address emerging trends and best practices on everything from print and radio to mobile, interactive web, and in real life information exchange. During PodCamp sessions, attendees are free to drop in, listen and learn about what is relevant to their needs, and if they choose to, move on to other sessions. You can also become an interactive part of the experience by sharing your knowledge as a speaker or stimulating ideas and asking questions as an active attendee.
If you are an established or aspiring blogger, podcaster, video blogger, or social media advocate and want to meet hundreds of people with the same interests, head over to podcampaz.org to get more information about this exciting event. And above all else, register to attend PodCamp AZ!
_______
Okay, I blogged the quasi-official blurb. On a more personal level, y’all need to come. It’s fun and informative and FREE! I’m one of the planning committee members and I’m planning big things. If you want to speak, register and say so. If you want to sponsor, register and say so. If you think you might want to attend, REGISTER and pencil in the dates on your calendar, November 14-15. PodCampAZ is the final event in Geek Week (actually more than a week) so keep watching for details on other AZ events in that time frame.
If this all looks too good to miss and you’re not in the PHX area, we will soon have hotel deals and some of us are willing to put people up just so they can come.
Seriously, you NEED to come. Conferences, parties, tweet-ups, and more conferences.
Sorry @jchutchins, I was out of town

Holy Crap! I haven’t really been paying attention to my friend JC Hutchins’ latest project. Not due to a lack of any talent on his part mind you, just my own busy not paying attention to anything kind of life. I missed all the lead-in to this! Shame on me.
Go to JC’s website to get more information. I will now.
I feel so stupid.
Don't needle the seamstress.

I absolutely hate sewing. Yet every so often I get this uncontrollable urge to drag out all my sewing crap and drive myself batshit crazy while fucking up some really nice material.
I have a really nice old sewing machine. A couple of years ago (during my last uncontrollable sewing urge) I had it refurbished. I remember the guy saying it was always better to get this old machine repaired than to buy a new one as the newer models are – like everything else – not built to last.
So I know it’s not the machine. I know it’s me. You know when people say they know just enough about a subject to be dangerous? That’s me. I can load the bobbin, I know the mechanics of the machine, and I can easily figure out patterns and how to get the material into the proper position to get the final product.
I can never figure out how to set the tensions for the material. That’s where the EPIC FAIL happens. I never get the foot tension right, or the thread tension right for the material I’m using at the moment. I don’t even know what this particular material is called to look it up!
I’m converting a long dress I bought years ago and never wore into a shorter dress and then taking the leftover material and making it into a skirt. It’s a handmade dress so there’s no handy tag to tell me what the material is. The skirt part is mostly done, that was just sew in a “hem” and then threading in some elastic. Fine, no problem. But the material kept getting pulled into the hole where the bobbin thread comes out, the seam is missing like every fifth stitch and isn’t tight/even and I’m pretty sure that’s due to the tension settings. Which I played with a billion times and still didn’t get right.
Shit.
All that crappy sewing didn’t matter so much on the skirt, because the seam is all gathered by elastic so you can’t see how bad it is. But now I want to hem the dress and THAT will be obvious if I fuck it up.
I HATE THIS.
I hate not quite understanding the finer points of the project I’m working on. It’s just how I feel about podcast engineering. I can understand the mechanics of how the equipment works but I can’t seem to grasp the finer points of adjusting stuff like gain and mid-range and shit.
Oh well.
Oh what a night!

Wednesday. Humpday. So much fun day.
I sold my old computer to Casey for the $160 that owed him. I told him the old flat screen didn’t work. I told him the power button didn’t always work which is why I never turned it off. I’d forgotten a couple of power cords and his babysitter left her purse here so I needed to deliver that stuff to Casey’s work at 3. Wandered over to Gangplank after that and managed to get some work done before Evo finally showed to record Gangplank’s podcast and then Evo@11. And that was fun, we had Jeff on again and he’s always a hoot, but the real fun came after.
A couple #evfn friends showed up (too late) for the recording and somehow the semi-drunken conversation quickily deteriorated. Jeff mentioned some online site that censored wristwatch because of the word in the middle and talk morphed into which is worse: pussy, twat or cunt. Now everyone agrees cunt is the worst and most insulting but one particular person thinks pussy is worse than twat. I’ve never known anyone who thought that. And even funnier, if you knew the young and proper lady involved in this conversation you’d laugh your ass off. The whole thing was so sureal. She’s so prim and seemingly straight laced, and constantly worried about getting into trouble at work. And even funnier is the company she works for is well known for their super-extra-naughty advertising.
I laughed so hard tonight I almost couldn’t breathe. Damn near wet my pants.
About last night

Well, we didn’t end up going to Karaoke after all. Something better came along. Jack called and invited us to join him and the group he was with which turned out to be some of the Farpoint Media people and some voice actors from the con, and Aaron Douglas. Yes, I hung out with Aaron Douglas!
CJ, Scotty and I met them all at some restaurant in Tempe but we quickly shifted the entire party to Four Peaks, where Scotty and I were seated between Aaron, Yuri Lowenthal and another extrememly interesting voice actor whose name I was never sure of. He said Boris, but I think he was pulling my leg. All very nice, very funny people. I had such a good time and I’m pretty sure I didn’t make too much of an ass of myself. I was well behaved, honest! Athough in the end when we were heading out onto the street to wait for their limo/van and I said, “I guess we’re walking out on the street.” Boris quickly replied something like “I would think you’d be used to that.” Dude!
We’d told jokes, chatted about twitter and other similar internet stuff, fear, government conspiracies, a little about their careers and lots about podcasting. Very fun night. Even when CJ’s car wouldn’t start we immediately got a jump from some other people and kidded around with them, too.
Edited: Boris is actually Boris Kievsky and he was amazingly interesting to talk to.
