Nocturnal, by Scott Sigler
Mar 10th
I try to listen to all of Scott’s books, but I’m really not a fan of podiobooks. As I’ve said before, I’m a visual person, and this morning there was a whole section (in Nocturnal #17) on genetics and sperm and chromosomes and I’m so lost. I’m hoping it won’t matter in the long run.
Scott (a few of you might remember him better as failed pimp Soupbone) is putting out Nocturnal now, and his previous podiobook Infection is coming out in hardcover (renamed Infected for some weird legal reason) on April 1st. Run, don’t walk, down to your local Borders/B&N and get it. You’ll never look at chicken scissors the same way again. Brilliant.
I skipped The Rookie, but I’ve read EarthCore and Ancestor and Scott’s vision to take over the world will more than likely come true. The man is twisted and talented.
The earlier you become a Sigler Junkie, the less likely you are to die in the end. Original Junkies will rule the world at his side. Then again, it’s Scott I’m talking about. We could be first in line as sacrifices. Either way, check this guy out. http://scottsigler.com/
March 4th is National Grammar Day?
Mar 4th
I suppose I should start listening to Grammar Girl’s podcast. Today’s post is entitled Top Ten Grammar Myths. I’ve forgotten quite a lot of those little tricks I learned in my earlier years, and I’m getting lazier at looking them up.
And I’m such a stickler for people making their best attempt at using good grammar . . .
A Different Point of View
Feb 22nd
I don’t think I’ve ever mentioned TD-0013 is a friend of mine. Maybe I have. But if you’ve never listened to his podcast you must start now. They’re not out very often but this latest one is great funny hilarious.
Go listen to THIS. It’s fairly short, about six and a half minutes.
Seriously. You’ll laugh your ass off.
PS I forget to mention that the different point of view (if you can’t be arsed to click the link) is that of a Stormtrooper. wickedgroovy, snowcalla, Star Wars fans. Go. Listen. Laugh.
And boy are my arms tired!

Phoenix Cactus Comicon was cool! Technically it’s still going on today but I don’t think I’ll go back. Maybe. I dunno. Too many obnoxious teenagers.
Friday night was all about the zombies! The Zombie Beauty pageant was cool.
Yesterday I met up with the Farpoint bunch and passed out flyers for Wingin It last night. TD-0013 (Kevin) walked past me twice complete with eye contact before suddenly he remembered he knew me on the third pass. His wife was there causing her own personal uproar too. I like that woman, I just have trouble remembering her name. The Admiral. Which is fine during “events” but if I run into her elsewhere I’d damn sure better call her by her real name, right? Also found Dan & CJ geeking their kids out with Jedi lessons. I watched a couple of independent movies then slipped over and watched parts of Star Trek: Of Gods and Men and listened to Walter Koenig and Tim Russ and a couple other guys do a Q&A.
An odd Wil Wheaton day. So I’m standing behind Michael as he’s chatting up Wil at his table. I lean around to Mike’s right and slip him a flyer to give to Wil for the recording last night. Wil barely glances at me at that point. Flash to later where I stood next to Mike in the back of the room during Wil’s (packed packed packed) presentation and reading from a couple of his books. Excellent time, I have to get these books, the guy is hilarious! Anyway, as he’s finishing I go sit down, knowing those of us in the FPM entourage will be the last ones out of the room. Wil is walking down the center aisle with everyone else, head down, not speaking to anyone or anything on his way out to the autograph table, right? And for some reason he slows down – looks me dead in the eye – and says, “thank you so much for attending” and continues on! Whah? I got chills. I’m speshul.
Other mentionables: The 400 lb guy in neck to toe black spandex. I don’t want to know which superhero he was trying to be. The Bandit car. Bought a Cthulhu t-shirt from Don at the Pulp Gamer booth. Eliza’s tea party bunch. How many young adults in various versions of anime costumes and how loud and annoying they were. Getting body slammed by that one boy and then Eliza’s husbean and (I think) Dan backing the poor kid into a corner. The horrible sad girls with no lives desperately singing in the karaoke room. Technical difficulties and then a short WI3D.
Maybe I will go back today. To get a Wil book and a VooDoo Baby for Ginnie. I just watched my neighbor walk out to her car wearing a Con badge. How did I not see here there before?
I'm Playing for Keeps.

I had a dream last night where I was the parent of Keepsie when she was maybe two years old. The whole teaching her to share – being even more important considering her power – and my tone of voice, first asking her to give back Bobby’s toy, then sterner Give Back Bobby’s Toy, then downright insistent and so forth. Which turned – as dreams do – into I was writing a parenting book for parents of special children with not-so-super powers. And then I had a superpower where if I look someone in the eye, they are paralyzed for approximately 30 seconds. I had to wear tacky mirrored sunglasses so I wouldn’t like, cause car crashes (accidental eye contact with other drivers, oops!) and I would have to lower my sunglasses whenever I did want my powers to work – such as on recalcitrant children.
Of course, awakening only started the whole would that be a real superpower or just a not-so-special third wave power argument in my head. I couldn’t remember if these characters had their powers as children or if they got them at puberty or later. Imagine poor Ian getting mad at someone on the playground.
All this must mean I need to purchase the book. Another story I’m better off reading because I just can’t retain enough hearing it verbally.
But if hearing a story is good enough for you, by all means. Go subscribe to Playing for Keeps written and performed/recorded by my good friend Mur Lafferty, otherwise known as sailormur.

Actually, I’ve been awake for an hour – Casey snores like he’s got a bulldozer up his nose. Even two rooms away and with my door shut I’m awake. Seriously rethinking letting him move in here. Dude.
Irritations: Having to leave the party way before I was ready. I warned the boy beforehand that I would want to stay late and he agreed but in the end I left early. Lately Casey’s been dropping me off while he takes Kira over to visit her mother because neither of them has a car and she’s only a few miles from DVS. Which means I’m kind of under a limitation on my time. So he had a bad day and wanted to go home. Tough shit but there it is, I can’t walk home from Phoenix.
Reflections: And at that point, I was just getting my head clear enough to notice there may have been flirtage aimed in my direction. I’m so unused to it that it totally passed me by. Oh sure, there is plenty of meaningless innuendo there on any given day, but this may have actually been more. I wish I could have stayed longer to see where that played. Now that I’ve had time to reflect, I want to find out more about this person. How to be subtle. Subtle is not my strong point. Unfortunately, he’s not local so I doubt I’ll be seeing him again anytime soon. I wonder how long he’s in town?
Connections: I forgot to mention Lindy! I’ve never watched Farscape, and she’s on the ScapeCast. Even in my Strongbow induced blur of midday I realized I liked this woman. I so seldom like and want to befriend women. I meet so many people that remain acquaintances but the perfect slanted look after a particular joke implies a similar sense of humor . . . I think we could really be friends. But I don’t think she’s local either.
Okay, now that I’ve got that all out of my head maybe I can get back to sleep. And look, now it’s actually 5 am. Isn’t that special.
Today is Saturday, yay!
Nov 17th
I’m going to enjoy today. Come hell or high water.
If you want to hang out with me, go to Wingin’ It 3D and find the live feed page and follow the directions. I usually monitor the (IRC) chat room so it’s practically interactive!
Starts around noon my time. Which is GMT -07:00 for all those people like me who suck at math.
I actually slept in this morning. I can’t remember the first time I slept past 6:30.
My MSWorks calendar program has taken a shit again. Every year or so I have to start over because the stupid program just stops and locks up. I just want a calendar program where I can enter stuff and print it out. You’d think there’d be 50 freeware programs out there that could do that. I don’t need pretty pictures and stuff, just something with a database. Grrrrr.
Playing for Keeps podcast novel
Nov 15th
It tells the story of Keepsie Branson, a bar owner in the shining metropolis of Seventh City: birthplace of super powers. Keepsie and her friends live among egotistical heroes and manipulative villains, and manage to fall directly in the middle as people with powers, but who just aren’t strong enough to make a difference. Or that’s what they’ve been told. As the city begins to melt down, it’s hard to tell who are the good guys and who are the bad.
Written and recorded by a close personal friend of mine, sailormur. There’s even a written version available complete with comic book cover. You should listen and/or read it today.
Seriously.
Shoo! Go now and download what’s available so far and subscribe to the rest!

This one time at PodcampAZ
Nov 4th
What I learned at PodcampAZ yesterday. Hmmm . . .
There are way more podcasters in the Phoenix area then previously suspected. I live in this little FPM world and guess what? There are tons of people out there in the ‘hood cruising along on the interwebz!
That one guy was really hot. Geeze.
First session speaker Clintus McGintus is a puddle jumper ‘cuz social whore butterfly just sounds so tacky. He’s convinced me (us?) that I need to also be on facebook. I’m already on twitter, and myspace, and flickr, and jaiku, and a little on digg. But he mentions a bunch more (technorati, pandora, ning, feedburner, blip.tv, vimeo, viddler and utterz) to check out. I’ll get there. Today’s project is Facebook.
Break – playing phone tag with daughter. Ain’t so good with the texting thing.
Session II had Evo Terra pimping having people to pimp him or Building Rabid Fans. This rabid fan loves her pimp. Okay, enough of that.
Lunch – Jack Mangan singing, hanging about, outdoor bar-b-que (I guess burgers and dogs cooked outside is technically BBQ) and more music. Some lady named Jody Gnant (who live streams her life 24/7, eek) and then Gilbert Martinez, who was HILARIOUS when he sang this.
Too HOT! Frakking November and the crowd seeks the A/C and the poor entertainers were left with just us few.
Session III was Building a Podcast from the ground up with the journey of Nicole and Marc’s video podcast. Advice on websites and hosting and equipment and advertising and how to get your stats and graphics and elephants and surveying your fans and breathe.
Break – getting tired.
Session IV was my friend Jack Mangan again talking about his community and how they carried him over rough patches and provide content and how he’s the leader of the pack but not the alpha dog. He’s so adorable.
Closing ceremonies. That hot guy sat right in front of me. I even told him he was hot. You know how freeing it is to say stuff like that when someone is totally out of your league? I’m so funny.
So many people had left that pulling exact ticket numbers for the door prizes would have taken all night, so they did a close-enough prize thing. And I won something! One of the few people who had the exact ticket number BTW. I won this and promptly came home and threw it on ebay. Something else totally out of my league.
All in all it was great fun. Seeing friends and learning new stuff. This is pushing me one step further towards recording some short video cast myself.
And because I’m bitchy by nature, I must reiterate my previous comments about the registration process. Everything should be on one site and easily accessible. With all these tech people, someone has to volunteer to set something better up for next year cuz dudes? The wiki stuff stinks.
Oh, and the place for the after party last night might be a great tourist place to eat but where we were sitting we couldn’t EAT. Nachos and potato skins. Which must not have been very good because people were leaving them all over. And it was LOUD with a live band just over there. Could we maybe next time find a different venue where people can get drinks but also be able to speak and get actual food?
But that hot guy was there! That made it just little bit nicer.
Anyway, the actual unconvention was a hit, just some of the peripheral stuff needed some better organization. Maybe I’ll volunteer next year.
Cheers!
Debbie, one of the Wingin’ It 3D Chorus of Voices.
