NME is not my enemy
Aug 10th
I officially have (and paid for) hotel reservations next weekend for NME, Friday and Saturday night. I’ll be at the Sahara right down the street from the Convention Center. Most people are at the Hilton, but at (currently) $76 a night, mine is a better deal, and it’s on the monorail thingy so I don’t have to walk. Some other people I know are planning on the Circus Circus but I’m not so good with the walking.
I sure could use a roommate. Not like that. I sure could use someone to share the expense of the room, not the bed. I requested two doubles so they’d get their own side of the room, not the bed.
Geesh people. It ain’t all about the sex. Sometimes it’s about the money.
The plan is to meet my ride at the crack of dawn Friday and go up with him. This should be interesting. I’m pretty sure I make this guy nervous as hell, and I dunno why. Or maybe he just appears uncomfortable around everyone. Or it could be me. And no, I’ve never aimed my considerable charm in his direction. Maybe once he figures out I’m not really a piranha he won’t be so uptight. It’s a long drive.
I already bought the tickets for the Coverville 500. This starts at 7 Friday night. I need to find someone to hang with for that.
Can’t wait to see my friends!
And two weeks after that is Dragon*Con! Sweet!
Engineeress? Hot nardly.

But I’m working on it.
So last night we recorded a second podcast. Evo’s still working through his format, ideas, length and such. Last week he chatted with Rick Stringer (no pressure on your first time, Debbie) and Chuck Reynolds. Last night it was Evo and Sheiladee and Tyson Crosbie and me, just talking.
And now instead of just running the equipment, he’s making me edit and blend and crop and shit. He says it’s because he just doesn’t want to do it himself, but he’s sure putting a lot of trust in me. Either that or he just doesn’t care, in which case why do it at all?
Of course, after I got home last night around 9:30 I couldn’t wait so I was up till 1 am getting episode 2 just right. And sometime this afternoon I need to go back over episode 1 and clean it up. He still needs to record the closing stuff, thank yous and contact information. And build some place on the internet to stick this stuff.
(For the record Evo, I don’t know nuthin about birthing no website! Find some other sucker.)
You local podcasting people, we’re recording on Wednesday evenings (5 – 8ish) at Gangplank. There’s a little (extra warm) studio, a huge room full of tech geek people (usually playing Mario something on the Wii) and tables to work at. A rather nice place to hang out. I haven’t seen any alcohol yet, but there’s hope. I think the podcasting equipment is available for you to use if you’ve the urge to slap something down. Or if you have an old set of headphones, or other spare stuff you’d like to give to a good home . . .
Come Saturday Morning
Jul 26th
Of course, up at 5. For no reason. This is going to be a really long day.
First stop, gas.
Second stop, breakfast.
Third stop, groceries.
At some point today I have GOT to get my car washed. I’m embarrassed by it. Earlier this week I agreed to meet up with friends and go to the swap meet today. She’s on a mission for a specific item, I just want to hang out with them. And I can’t remember if I’m supposed to meet them at 10 or 11.
I have GOT to color my hair today. Yet another thing I’m embarrassed about. My roots are glowing! There’s a birthday thing for a new friend at The Yucca Tap tonight. Maybe I can hang out with Ladawn this afternoon and talk her into coloring my hair. I hate doing it myself. I always miss some obnoxious spot. She’s going tonight too. I hate that just about everyone I currently hang with is in Tempe/Chandler and I’m way out here across Mesa. With the price of gas, I hate driving back and forth.
Though I miss doing Wingin’ It 3D, I certainly don’t miss that drive every weekend.
Only 33 days left til Dragon*Con! Only 19 days left til NME! Okay, I’m still not positive about the NME thing. I want, I want, but my options at the moment are to ride up with my son and his bunch, ride up with a friend – who always seems uncomfortable around me so I dunno if he’s shy or if he’s just being “nice” – either way that might be a really uncomfortable trip, or I shell out the dough and fly. I don’t have a room yet either. Can’t decide anything until Paycheck Friday, then see how the rates have gone up since last time I checked. I WILL NOT let NME financially interfere with D*C. Priorities!
Yeah, that was weird about the timing. I mentioned to Casey about going to Vegas that weekend and he wanted to go. Not to the event, just ride up and back together. That evolved into his whole gang going for the same weekend . . . one big no-kids partying weekend! Culminating with a trip up the Stratosphere on Sunday to surreptitiously dump Ed’s ashes from the top. Dunno if that’s legal. I doubt it. But Ed loved Vegas and that’s what he always said he wanted. Okay, he was always intoxicated when he’d say that but what the hell.
Hey, it’s finally late enough for stuff to be open! Off I go . . .
False modesty?

Is that when you don’t think many people will like your product so you aren’t prepared when the downloads outstrip your site’s capacity?
Yeah, Dr. Horrible (who is apparently still developing his evil nemesis abilities) can’t keep up with the demand. Patience. Or go to iTunes. Patience is cheaper! But don’t just write it off. It’s good enough to keep trying.
Farpoint (Fool Party) Recap
Jun 29th
THAT was so much fun.
Got to hang with old friends and meet new friends and generally have a really great time.
Swimming off and on, live feed all day and the occasional show recording between. I remembered all my gifts: for Eliza (little bottle of Hawaii and a hair decoration/comb) and Lorri (a different hair adornment) and the Mehana Pale Ale and Volcano Red Ale for Mike. I made two Jello-Cool Whip-Oreo pies that were a hit and tried a couple of new things.
Friends from Australia (Enormous) Steve and his wife Emily were there. We’ll have to come up with a new name for Enormous (which was actually supposed to be Anonymous but we couldn’t understand that with his accent) cuz he’s lost sooo much weight! He looks so much healthier. I love Emily.
Eric from Sydney brought me a cute little kangaroo fur change purse. Both he and Steve are trying to get new jobs in the US. I’m half expecting the new wave of illegal immigrants to be Australian.
Old friends Yooper and Yayoie (I have no idea if that’s how her name is spelled) and Doug and Marsha (who I keep wanting to call Mary) and Rhettro and his wife (and OMG I thought *I* was raunchy – I’ll blurb about her later) and CASizemore, and Jack Mangan, and Eliza and her BFF Robin (and Mr. Eliza showed up for a little while) and all the other usual suspect.
New friends Michael M-something (ClockworkOrange in the IRC) is cute cute and way interesting besides. Another fella I kept reminding to put on a name tag and he refused, only I find out later he’s Jeffrey and semi-famous (Tosh on Babylon 5 which I never watched) and I suppose I should have known that by osmosis.
I can’t remember everyone! My bad.
J.C. Hutchins' OBSIDIAN
May 25th
J.C. has staged a treasure hunt of promotional posters for his upcoming Obsidian kick-off.
The poster above is available in a much better format at the website of my adorable cutie-pie friend Tee Morris. Tee’s books/podiobooks include Morevi and Billibub Baddings and The Case of the Singing Sword and the upcoming Billibub Baddings and the Case of the something Pendant. Plus he’s all in on the Podcasting for Dummies stuff and he’s got this Man vs Child video on YouTube.
Oh, and he’s the main contributor to the Joe Murphy Memorial Site Give Us A Minute podcast.
I love Tee.

J.C. has staged a treasure hunt of promotional posters for his upcoming Obsidian kick-off.
The poster above is available in a much better format at the website of super-uber creepy horror novelist Scott Sigler. I’ve talked about his stuff here before, Infected and Earthcore and about his Playa’s Party at D*C last year. I don’t usually like horror, but I like Scott so I’ve listened to/read some of his good stuff. If you like a twisted mind ala Stephen King, you should check his podiobooks out.
J.C. Hutchins' OBSIDIAN

When the power fails … chaos reigns.
Author J.C. Hutchins has recruited the biggest names in podcast storytelling for 7th Son: OBSIDIAN, a fiction anthology “first-ever” in podcasting, including:
- Michael A. Stackpole
- Scott Sigler
- Tee Morris
- Mur Lafferty
- Matt Wallace
- Mark Yoshimoto Nemcoff
- Christiana Ellis
- Evo Terra
- Dan Klass
- Wichita Rutherford
- TD-0013
- Soccergirl
- The cast of The Radio Adventures of Dr. Floyd
- George Hrab
You have all seen me gush on and on about J.C. Hutchins’ 7th Son podcast novel(s). During that story one small part is the power goes out for most of the U.S. This anthology brings together stories from the authors and podcasters above about what came after.
J.C. has staged a treasure hunt of promotional posters for his upcoming Obsidian kick-off.
The poster above is available in a much better format at the website of New York Times bestselling novelist Michael A. Stackpole. Check out Mike’s place and maybe you’ll like his stuff, too. Mike writes in the Star Wars world, podcasts his own Fortress Draconis, he’s semi-regular on Dragon Page, and he looks damn fine in a pair of black jeans. And oh my gotch his voice will make you squirm.
I plan on posting a different poster every day so you can see how great they are and just maybe find some new authors and podcasts along the way. Aww c’mon, give it a try.
Freaked me the frak out!
May 14th
I downloaded a couple of ring tones from J.C. Hutchins’ 7th Son site a few weeks ago and totally forgot I’d actually assigned one to “reminders” on my new phone.
More from JC Hutchins at Myxer
I’m washing dishes and suddenly I hear this laugh. A laugh I’d heard a lot listening to 7th Son awhile back. FREAK! Seriously, my heart actually raced for a minute until I remembered the ring tone.
To check out more (FREE!) 7th Son ring tones.
Plus, there’s a new anthology series coming out soon called 7th Son Obsidian. Short stories in the 7th Son world. I can’t wait.
I can’t wait to see J.C. at Dragon*Con this year and give him a big ole squishy hug. I’m hoping closer to the event he organizes his Beta Clone Army to all wear their t-shirts at the same time and be an actual little Army.
The Weekend.
May 11th
Confused.
I can’t really go into the WI3D thing. I’m not sure what will end up on the actual show or what’s coming up in the next few weeks. Much conversation. If you were listening to the live feed, then . . . well . . . I can’t really say. People are unhappy, plans are in the works, and I’m just gonna keep going and see how it all plays out. I’m just a bit player on someone else’s podcast so I just do what I’m told.
After.
Took Eliza home and LaDawn and I went up to Mill Ave. I don’t feel safe there on my own now after what happened to Ed, but when someone’s with me I’m not so nervous. We shared a dinner at My Big Fat Greek Restaurant and then hung out at Lanita. Visited with the few people who still work there that I know. Talked about Ed. Met some shady guy who says he’s a lawyer but also mentioned he lives in a motel on University. Sure. Betcha there’s a lot of baggage there! Made it home by Midnight so I didn’t turn into a pumpkin.
Mother’s Day.
Phone rang (ignored) around 3:30 am and Max had drunk dialed me from some bar. Left a Happy Mother’s Day message. Kid still doesn’t understand time differences. Ginnie managed to wander home mid-morning and gave me a gorgeous flowering plant. I made my obligatory call to my own Mother. Dad called this evening to say Happy Mother’s Day and Casey is supposed to take me to Texas Roadhouse for dinner . . . at 8 . . . and it’s 7:40 and I have no idea where he is. Whatever.
Wait, he just called and I get to pick him up. Hope it’s not too crowded!
Hope yous guys had a nice Mother’s Day!
