Okay, I should have known better. Nothing ever works out right for me.
I asked people and I did some research and I probably should have gone with some other product. I knew something like Apple TV or whatever would be a better choice but…
I only wanted something to watch Netflix and some YouTube on my TV. Simple eh? After some research I determined a Chromecast would be sufficient for what I wanted AND it was only $35. So that’s what I asked my kids to get me for Christmas.
First thing tried it out at Max’s house, casting YouTube videos from my phone. Easy peasy setup and had it running right quick. Brought it home and same thing, it worked great!
Hours, days, reboots, restarts, research, phone calls to Chromecast, Belkin and Cox and I finally got it running again.
By the way, Belkin hates my Chromecast. Seriously.
Yay! Watched a couple of episodes of Dexter (actually 7) and finally had to, you know, sleep. Tried to start it up again yesterday and again, nothing. Rebooted it again, and it wouldn’t set up. Fucking Belkin. Tweaked some router settings (most of which I barely grasp what they mean) and FINALLY everything worked again.
So far every time I want to use it I have to do the setup all over. Maybe the tweaking was the final answer. Though according to what info I found online I need to:
- If you have a dual band router, ensure that AP isolation/client mode is disabled. This may require a small change in your Wi-Fi router settings.
- Enable Multicast, UPnP, & IGMP in your router settings.
- If youâ€™re running DNS software, enable the following public Google DNS IP addresses: 18.104.22.168 & 22.214.171.124
- Disable any VPN software on the device you are using to setup your Chromecast.
I barely understand (and found the settings for) UPnP and Multicast. Can’t find any settings for AP isolation/client mode so that’s out. I surfed the useless Belkin site and there’s nothing there telling me how to do it. Don’t fucking know if I’m running DNS software cuz I have no idea what that or VPN means. I’m not exactly a techtard, but my grasp of this shit is barely at fingertip level.
But right this minute it’s working and I’m halfway through season 2 of Dexter.
Other than getting it to work consistently my only other complaint is there’s no control. You can’t pause or rewind or anything. To play something from Netflix you start the episode and then click on the cast button and it restarts on your TV. Fine. But what’s on your laptop (where I presume you’d control anything) is just the title screen so you can’t pause there either.
For $35 (that I didn’t spend) this will work just fine for now. I’d give it a 3 out of 5. When it works. But I’ll soon be looking for something that works better.
The other thing I’m unsure of is when I look at available network connections on my wifi list this Chromecast is on it. Unsecured. Does that mean everything it’s connected to is unsecured? People nearby can see it and/or get on it? I don’t quite understand how that works so if you have a clue let me know.
