so don't ask if you don't want to know
Blip
I follow this guy’s blog. I don’t know him personally but if I told you who it was, you’d know him too. He’s entertaining, funny, and real. Let’s call him… Bob.
Bob’s post today had sad news. His beloved (and I mean beloved) dog was hit by a car. They’re moving and in the process the little beast was where he shouldn’t have been. It happens. This dude took such delight in his dog, posting pictures and stories.
I feel bad for him. If he hadn’t suspended comments, I’d post a condolence.
What the fuck is wrong with me? I’m not a dog person! I’m not any kind of animal person! And I’ve had real life friends who’ve lost their pets recently and though I’m tactful enough to act bad for them, I don’t really care. It’s just not in me to care. I’ve barely felt anything when out own family pets have died! The most I’ve ever felt for an animal is maybe affection, like you would for a particularly adorable neighbor kid.
Yes, I’m a horrible person because I feel house pets are just moving pieces of furniture with bad habits. Sue me.
But I feel really bad for Bob because he lost his adored pet.
I’m must be getting soft. A blip in my normal unfeeling heart or the start of a trend?

You don’t care about the dog, you care about the guys loss. And good for you. Empathy is an admirable trait.

Nothing wrong with the way you feel now or any other time. There’s a big difference between someone’s pet that was there more than because the kids needed a pet.
For me empathy is a bad thing because I cry when someone loses their favorite sweater.

It’s the empathy that moves you – a person you cared about suffered a loss. A lot of people don’t give a damn about what is important to others. You do, and it’s a good thing.
