so don't ask if you don't want to know
Happy Independence Day
Having peeps from all over the world on my flist, I also need to say Have A Nice Day to those who don’t celebrate their country’s independence today.
Whew.
My computer wouldn’t power up yesterday (again) so now I know it’s on borrowed time. I know it’s something in the power supply. Could be the actual power supply (I did a quick price check last night and I’m screwed) or maybe just the stupid blue power button. Here’s hoping it’s the frakking button. As with last Saturday, I checked all the connections and finally gave up and took the damned tower out to the nearest repair place (Data Doctors) to get a diagnosis. They wanted $125 just to diagnose so fuggedaboudit for now. As before I left the stupid tower in the car in the heat for hours and when I plugged it all back in again it starts fine. For now, I just won’t turn it off. Of course, the warranty period has passed, and when I called Gateway (I got Inari with the eastern indian accent) they wanted $59 to chat about it. I know it’s a hardware problem and that can’t be fixed over the phone. Why would I pay someone across the world to ask me a bunch of stupid questions and then tell me they can’t help.
Today, today, today. I’m going over Ladawn’s tonight. Casey invited me to go with his bunch to the ginormous church around the corner that does a whole public 4th of July thing – music, games, food, fireworks – but he sent Kira to stay with her mother for a week, which will probably end much sooner knowing her – and I’d rather not. Ginnie’s working til about 8? 9? and I don’t know what her plans are for the night.
Hope you all have a good day whatever you do.

I wonder if it might be something to do with a static build up in your computer. The next time it won’t turn on, unplug the tower from the socket and hold the power button down for 15 seconds. This should wipe out the residual power still held and, hopefully, any static as well. Also, try a different plug. It might be the plug itself. Oh, and clean your heat sink. That always helps. There’s bound to be lots of fuzz and crap built up under the fan. You’ll have to remove the fan to get to it. I had a laptop that wouldn’t power on until I cleaned about a half inch of gunk off of the heatsink.

aaaaaaaaand could you be a little more specific as to what exactly a heatsink is?
I’m picturing an actual SINK full of hot sudsy water. Somehow I do not think that is whatchew mean.

The grey thing. Look up your computer model number and I’m sure you can find a schematic. But it’s the thing directly beneath the fan in your computer, usually located directly on the motherboard.
